Comprehensive language disorder assessment

For toddlers through adulthood

Language is how we connect, learn and ask for what we need. When it doesn’t come easily, everything else can get harder too.

Our language evaluations look at understanding and expression together, and at how language fits with thinking, attention and social skills.

For more answers to common questions, see Language disorders questions, answered.

You might be noticing

  • Late talking or a small vocabulary for their age
  • Difficulty following directions or conversations
  • Trouble putting thoughts into words or telling a story in order
  • Frustration or behavior that may come from not being understood

What a full assessment includes

The exact steps depend on age and the questions being asked. Your provider will walk you through the plan before testing begins.

  1. 1

    Developmental history

Early milestones, hearing and health history, and family background.

  2. 2

    Receptive and expressive language

How well language is understood and how well it is used.

  3. 3

    Related areas

Cognitive, social and attention factors that often travel with language differences.

  4. 4

    Practical recommendations

Guidance for home and school, and referrals when speech or other therapies would help.

Wondering what a full evaluation might show?

Every person is different, and so is every evaluation. Tell us what you're noticing and we'll help you decide whether a closer look makes sense.
